Verde Margarita

Verde Margarita

Ok, I’m not claiming to be a trendsetter here but I’ve been drinking tequila long before this paleo/keto frenzy started making waves. Tequila is an upper, unlike any other alcohol, hence why you probably can’t sleep after a night of margaritas. But seriously, tequila is healthy-ish, and if you’re drinking it right it shouldn’t give you a hangover. There is an exception to this though, José Cuervo. José is the devil, and not really tequila at all. The color is fake and the liquid is almost 50% corn syrup (hence the headache and missing clothing the next day). Blanco or silver is the purest, made with 100% agave and the best for margaritas.

I am probably the pickiest margarita drinker ever and you should be too. Fresh lime should always be used, never sweet & sour mix (talk about a stomach ache) and never Rose’s lime (if you don’t know what that is, good). It should always be shaken with ice then poured over fresh ice. No one wants a margarita with washed up ice cubes.

I have 3 favorite tequilas right now.

  1. Espolon- inexpensive and clean easy drinking flavor

  2. Casamigos- mainly because the great packaging and my love for George Clooney, but also great flavor.

  3. Patron- because it’s a solid tequila and my favorite to sip on the rocks. Always smooth, especially when cold. Tip: if you’re ordering tequila shots ask for an orange sprinkled with cinnamon instead of salt and lime.

The recipe below can be made with any triple sec but I always like to change mine up. Here are my 2 favorite right liqueurs right now.

  1. St Germain Elderflower Liqueur- a Nikle favorite. Floral notes, not too sweet, pairs with almost anything.

  2. Ancho Reyes Chile Liqueurs- there are two flavors- one is red and made with ancho chiles and one is green (Verde) and made with Poblanos. Both are handcrafted in Mexico and bursting with flavor, neither one is too spicy.
